Black & Gold by Sam Sparro

Culture Shock LogoThere’s a story of a house built in the framework of relative philosophy. If you think about it, that sentence does not make sense because philosophical relativism, in essence, is defined by being un-definable (--if that even makes sense.) It’s variable, it all depends on the situation, and there is no standard, no truth, and no solid ground to stand on. In this house, there are stairs that lead to nowhere and doors that may or may not be functional and aren’t built for any particular purpose.
The whole picture illustrates the need for modern philosophy to, not only make sense in its own theory, but also to provide itself as a livable truth. You, I’m sure, at some point have been frustrated by someone’s words not matching up to their actions, or even rules that look good on paper, but that don’t work well in real life. The popular view in Relative Philosophy says there are no rules, there is no God, all of this universe is by chance, thus, leaving you a product of chance without purpose. This is the point where I think of this song. Relative philosophy leads you down a whole bunch of paths that ultimately leave you, the human, here, but with a pointless existence. If you can’t find purpose in your own life, know then that ripple extends to the bigger sphere of the whole of humanity. If you don’t have a purpose for existing, no one does, nor does anything else. Anywhere. Ever. All of creation is pointless without a Creator—which is a line similar to one expressed in this song “Cause if you’re not really here…Then the stars don’t even matter…”
Have you ever thought about how beautiful the planet is? I’m not trying to be some star-crossed, big –eyed fairy, but really—have you noticed how the things that you see please your eye? There’s symmetry & artful asymmetry, color, a sense of theatre about everything we see. God didn’t have to make a sunset beautiful. If evolution caused everything just to be functional with no further purpose for humans other than to exist, procreate, and slowly expire—then why is there beauty? Another line I love in this song “Now I’m filled to the top with fear…That it’s all just a bunch of matter…” Is it all just a bunch of matter that happens to be wonderful? Or is it created to please the eye, created for a purpose? I can’t imagine humanity without a Creator. At this point in mainstream culture, we’ve gone so far away from God, yet are groaning for His fulfillment and purpose for our lives. It seems so obvious to me, and this song is a huge example of how we long for God, and nothing else can take that place or fill up that desire. Something I can say for myself, in inspiration of this song, to God “If You’re not really here, I don’t wanna be either.”

Discuss this song

If the fish swam out of the ocean
And grew legs and they started walking
And the apes climbed down from the trees
And grew tall and they started talking

And the stars fell out of the sky
and my tears rolled into the ocean
And now I’m looking for a reason why
you even set my world into motion

Cause if you’re not really here
Then the stars don’t even matter
Now I’m filled to the top with fear
That it’s all just a bunch of matter
Cause if you’re not really here
Then I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold
Black and gold
Black and gold

I look up into the night sky
I see a thousand eyes staring back
And all around these golden beacons
I see nothing but black

I feel the weight of something beyond them
I don’t see what I can feel
If vision is the only validation
Then most of my life isn’t real

Cause if you’re not really here
Then the stars don’t even matter
Now I’m filled to the top with fear
That its all just a bunch of matter
Cause if you’re not really here
Then I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold
Black and gold
Black and gold

Cause if you’re not really here
Then the stars don’t even matter
Now I’m filled to the top with fear
That it’s all just a bunch of matter
Cause if you’re not really here
I don’t wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold
Black and gold
Black and gold…
